Maternity / Pregnancy Photoshoot Tips and Prep Guide
A few tips to get the most out of your maternity photoshoot
Hair & make up – You should style your hair however makes you feel beautiful. If you have long hair, big curls are always a great option. For makeup, it’s up to you, but keep in mind that a matted look is preferred as shiny, sparkly makeup does not photograph as well. If you need some tips, please check out my blog post here. And if you have any questions, I’m always happy to chat!
Make up & hair recommendations:
- Marina Georgia Makeup – she will travel to your house if you live in her service area.
- Eva Svobodova – Will travel to your house and has lots of Maternity session experience. Please find her instagram here: @eva.s.makeup, +1 604 352 9493
- Zazou Salon
– It is located about 3 minutes from the studio. Please book an appointment ahead of time as they book up quickly.
Underwear – Please wear a nude, preferably strapless bra with nude underwear as it will be the easiest to match with whatever dress you choose. However, if you don’t have nude underwear, bring a white and black option that will work as well and we can always hide the straps.
Nail Polish – Neutral nail colours or natural nails are recommended. Bright and bold colors are pretty, but they can distract from the overall look of the images and might clash with the dress colour.
Client Closet – I have a growing collection of 50+ dresses and fabrics you are welcome to choose from, so no need to bring your own unless you are going for a specific look. Please find some of my dresses here.
Pants – It would be wonderful if you could bring a pair of either black or white pants or jeans. They don’t need to fit around your tummy; in fact, the open look is what we are going for. However, if this isn’t a look you want to incorporate, please don’t worry, and we can skip it.
Jewelry/Shoes – You may want to bring jewelry or other meaningful accessories to wear during your session. I’m happy to help you select what will look best with each of your gowns/dresses. While shoes aren’t necessary for most of the looks, if you have a special pair of heels you want to incorporate into an image, please bring them along.
Partners – It would be great to have a couple of options for partners if they’ll be in the portraits as well. I recommend bringing one lighter-coloured outfit (e.g. khakis and a white shirt) and one darker option (dark blue or grey shirt and dark pants). Depending on the dress choices, we definitely want a little more dressy as light-coloured jeans and a T-shirt might look out of place if you’re wearing a black gown, unless we’re going for a casual direction. Please avoid logos and patterns.
Please don’t worry if you have never had a professional photoshoot and don’t know where to look or how to pose. I am here to guide you through the whole session and will make sure to pose you in the most flattering ways to best show off your stunning curves and baby bump!
